Kenmare Bay, Kerry at Christmas

Staying at my in-law’s house in Kenmare, County Kerry, I was wide awake at 5 am and couldn’t get back to sleep. I had never explored across the bay directly opposite the house so what better time than in the dark, rain and snow.

I drove around the bay until I was approximately where I wanted to be. I then took a hard left and drove up a mountain not even knowing where I was or what I could see. I could see some mass of water out the car window so parked and waited for sunrise. I was met with a spectacular view so quickly fired off a few bracketed photos to try some HDR later on back at the computer.

When I exhausted as many shots I could of the area as my fingers stopped working I decided to duck back into the car and drive back towards the bay where I had seen a sign for a pier. When I got there I could see the sun coming up with this amazing colour. I quickly set up a long exposure for 8 minutes. At about 4 minutes it started hail stoning hard. The Fujifilm X-T20 not being weatherproof, I did my best to shield it but had to grab all the gear and run for the car. Only when I reached the car did I press the shutter button. The results were the best shot of the morning and a 'happy accident'. Somewhere in that exposure is a ghost of me running for the car!
